What is a Virtual Tour?

Why do a Virtual Tour?

"So, how long does it take?" and other Frequently Asked Questions.

Many of our clients have similar questions about virtual tours and the process involved in getting one created for their business. Here, we try to address the most frequently asked questions. Of course, if you have a question that hasn't been answered here, don't hesitate to contact us.

What's involved in the process of creating a Virtual Tour for my website?

After we discuss your Virtual Tour needs, we will make a proposal that includes costs and details of what the project will entail. We will then schedule a convenient time for the photo shoot. The photos are staged and captured; then the real work starts. The images are digitized, stitched together, and converted to Equirectangular images for Flash output. Next, we design the interface, which can take as little as an hour or as much as a week, depending on the level of customization you've elected. If you've decided to create a fully customized tour, you'll need to provide us with some of the items we'll use in the tour, such as descriptions of the locations, logos, etc. Within a week of the photo shoot, we'll have a finished prototype, which we'll put it online for your approval. If anything needs to be changed, we'll take care of it, and your brand new Virtual Tour will be ready for the world to see.

What do we need to do to prepare for the photo shoot?

Just make your place look like you want it to be seen. Obviously, the area should be clean and tidy to present it in the best way possible. In some cases, such as hotels and hospitals, staff members can pose in the photos to show the excellent service you provide to your customers.

How long will the photo shoot take?

For each virtual tour location, the photographer will need about 5-10 minutes to set up and capture the images. In order to ensure that things are done right, we may need more time. For example, if the sky is overcast or the sunlight isn't perfect, we will wait until conditions are right before creating the images. This could take a day or more. Generally, the entire photo shoot will take less than two hours.

How do I get my Virtual Tour online?

It seems scary, but it's not. We will make sure your tour gets online with minimal effort on your part. If you want the tour to be on your website, we can edit the code and embed it ourselves, or send the files to your webmaster. If you would rather we host it, all you'll need to do is put a link on your website to the URL we provide you with. We'll host the virtual tour on our site for free for one year, and $60 per year after that.

How large are the Virtual Tour files?

For each location, the files can be from 300 kb - 3 Mb, depending on the resolution you choose. In our high-resolution example, each room is about 1 Mb, which takes about 15-20 seconds to download on a typical broadband connection.

Will everybody be able to see the Virtual Tour?

Our Virtual Tours are created with Adobe Flash. We use Flash because it allows us the highest level of customization and nearly everyone (over 99%) can see the content immediately. If you can watch YouTube, you can see our virtual tours. If a viewer doesn't have Flash installed, they will be given a link to the program and will be ready to see your virtual tour in moments. If you prefer, we can create the tour in Quicktime instead of Flash; however, quicktime is limited in its customization abilities and only 60% of viewers have the program installed, so we do not recommend it.
